Flash gun and lighting experimentation

Flash gun close to and facing subject : Bright :

These images were all taken with the flash gun on a tripod facing the subject and placed quite close to the subject so that the subject is well lit and harsh shadows are created. This type of technique may be used in high fashion/street/editorial photography. I don't think it would be used in photographs for clothing catalogues or websites as they usually have very clean white backgrounds otherwise a dark harsh shadow may distract the buyers attention from the garment which is on sale.

Flash gun far away from but facing subject : Ambient :

These photographs were taken with the flash gun on a tripod placed further away from the subject than in the first set of photographs. The flash gun is still facing the subject creating shadows but they're not as harsh and the light on the subject isn't as harsh either. This creates a more ambient light which is more warm toned.
