ABSTRACT FEAR Assignment : Task 1 : Research Installation Art

Installation art is an artistic genre which aims to transform an area or space (usually interior - exterior works are usually called Land Art, however it can be either interior or exterior). Installation art is also usually created using three dimensional works, however it's really up to the artist and what they want to portray, either through three dimensional pieces, sculpture, photography, painting, video, audio etc.

Tracey Emin is famous for her installations. She is a British artist and is part of the YBA's (Young British Artists). Emin's installations are often very controversial and people usually love her work or hate it. Here are some of her installations :

Feeling Pregnant III :

The Perfect Place To Grow :

Knowing My Enemy :

It's Not The Way I Want To Die :

Self Portrait :

Sleeping With You :

Everyone I Have Ever Slept With :

My Bed :

My Bed was created in 1998 and exhibited in 1999. It was nominated for a turner prize. The installation featured her unmade dirty bed. She said that she had moved it from her bedroom to the exhibition just as it was and didn't change anything to it. It also featured things like used condoms and blood stained underwear. Emin said it was the place she spent several days whilst suffering with suicidal depression brought on by relationship issues. The piece has received a lot of media attention over the last 10 years. Emin has received a lot of criticism and negative feedback on this piece as people think it is disgusting and shouldn't be classed as art. My Bed was bought by Charles Saachi for £150,000.

In a way I like Emin's work because I can see her personality within each piece. I think each piece has a meaning and portray part of Tracey.

Damien Hirst:

Damien Hirst is another member of the YBA's (Young British Artists).

Bruce Nauman:

Bruce Nauman is an american artist who pratices in sound effects, sculpture, photography, neon, video, drawing, painting and performance.

One of his pieces is Good Boy Bad Boy
